Di Octyl Phthalate(DOP) is an organic compound with the formula C6H4(CO2C8H17)2. DOP is the most common member of the class of phthalates, which are used as plasticizers.

It is the dieter of phthalic acid and the branchedchain 2-ethylhexanol.

Di-n-octyl phthalate is a colorless, odorless, oily liquid that doesn’t evaporate
easily.

DOP appears as a clear liquid with a mild odor. Slightly less dense than
water and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Flash point 430 °F.

Due to its suitable properties and the low cost, DOP is widely used as a plasticizer in manufacturing of articles made of PVC. Plastics may contain 1% to 40% of DOP.

It is also used as a hydraulic fluid and as a dielectric fluid in capacitors.

DOP also finds use as a solvent in glow sticks.

Approximately three million tons are produced and used annually worldwide.
